Heather Navarro, a founder of Central West End Families and Friends, sent this poster announcing Saturday's neighborhood celebration of the city-wide public art project "Wings in the City," which benefits BJC's Pediatric Hospice Program. Saturday afternoon's activities around the Maryland Plaza Fountain include a chocolate butterfly station sponsored by Bissinger's, live music, and a ceremonial butterfly release. Central West End Families and Friends is one of several generous sponsors of this family event to be held between 3 and 5 p.m.
Four sculptures were installed around the fountain at the beginning of March (see my post on the subject here). During one of our many recent storms, the butterfly created by former John Burroughs student Elizabeth Barenholtz, as her senior project, was damaged and took flight for repairs. Frances Thompson, Marketing Director of Maryland Plaza, hopes Elizabeth's "Imagine," seen below, will be returned in time for Saturday's party.
The butterfly sculptures will remain in place until May 21, when those that haven't already been sold will be auctioned at an "Art Takes Flight" benefit. In the meantime, stop by Maryland Plaza Saturday afternoon and enjoy the festivities. I think we are all feeling a bit pent-up with all of the bad weather, so a chance for a little neighborhood camaraderie will be most welcome.
