As I mentioned last week, Tony Streckfuss (in his summer whites above), the proprietor of the newsstand at Euclid and Maryland, arranged for a visit by the St. Louis Fire Department's Hook & Ladder #5 last Saturday morning. There was a garbled explanation from Tony about how he traded six newspapers for the visit. However he managed it, neighborhood families enjoyed meeting the firemen and having an occasion to visit with each other. The children, of course, were mostly enthralled (see toddler below) with the chance to climb all over the huge truck.
If you missed my post about the neighborhood's Engine House 28, located just east of Euclid on Enright, you can see it here.
It was a joy! Tony is a true gem to have in the neighborhood. I would love to see him get the permanent newsstand he’s been lobbying for.
