Over the past year a group of Washington University architecture students have been organizing a symposium titled Women in Architecture 1974/2014, in collaboration with faculty members and architects who participated in a 1974 symposium on the status of women in architecture. The event is scheduled for this weekend, November 7 to 9, at the Sam Fox School on Washington University's Danforth Campus.
Some of the students involved in this year's event are photographed above. From top: Shannon Slade, Adina Bauman, Shira Grosman, Alex Mei, Kayla Kroot, Alicia Ajayi, Michelle Hauk, bottom row: Grace Davis, and Jessica Olson.
CWEnder Hannah Roth, bottom right, Lecturer in the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, was Chairwoman of the 1974 event. Forty years ago, students, scholars and practitioners from across the country came together for what were, at the time, courageous discussions about the status of women in architecture. Hannah said: "On the 40th anniversary of the 1974 symposium, there are many achievements to celebrate, questions yet to answer, and compelling reasons to continue the conversation."
The Keynote Speaker for the event is Nasrine Seraji, founding partner of Atelier Seraji, Architects and Partners, and dean of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture Paris-Malaquais. Seraji's lecture, scheduled for Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. is titled, As a woman I have no country, as a woman my country is the world of architecture.
Panel discussions include: Feminisms: Now and Then; Women in Architectural Education; Crossing Boundaries; and Women in Design Practice. Visit the website for a complete list of events and lecturers.
Events are free and open to the public, however, registration is required.
Women in Architecture 1974/2014 is supported by a Diversity and Inclusion Grant from the Office of the Provost.

Another remarkable CWEnder is architectural designer Rocio Romero, above. You may have met her on this blog in an earlier post (here). In addition to her successful business designing prefab houses, Rocio is introducing a line of home furnishings to the public at a cocktail reception on Thursday, November 6, at CEL, Center for Architecture & Design, 3307 Washington in Grand Center.
Designing her own product line has always been on Rocio's back burner, but with two small children and a business to run, she hasn't had time until now. She explained that "the geometry of the corten steel fire pit (also available in black), shown above & left, with a hole for air circulation lends itself to a great fire."
The new line also includes a "firewood" end table which can be used outside in conjunction with the firepit, or inside for display or storage, see above. It's available in the same finish as the fire pit or in chocolate brown. Rocio has also designed an industrial-look candlestick, above.
To maintain product control and keep production local, everything is "Made in Missouri." There are more Rocio Romero designs on the front burner.
For more information about Thursday's reception contact: Jasmin Aber, Executive Director, CEL/[email protected]
