Approximately 20 neighbors spread mulch around the perimeter of the sunflower beds in the 5100 block of Delmar last Saturday morning. The Delmar Sunflower + Project is spearheaded by 28th Ward Alderman Lyda Krewson, above.
The youngest worker, and he was tireless, was Jack Auer, son of Doug Auer, a founder of Third Degree Glass Factory, 5200 Delmar Blvd.
Luckily, the first wave of the day's rain started to fall just as we spread the last shovelful of mulch. Later, as I washed the mud off my gloves in the rainwater at the curb on Delmar, and walked barefoot to my car (I, like everyone, was caked with mud), I thought about how peaceful that spot seemed and how far we've come, thanks to Lyda's vision, and to something as simple as a field of sunflowers.
Join us next Saturday, May 23 starting at 9 a.m. for planting day. Stop by whenever you can.
