Max Starkloff was a disability rights leader and founder of Paraquad, which was located in the CWE on Laclede Avenue, just east of Newstead. Starkloff and his wife Colleen, who was his partner in Paraquad (now located on Oakland Avenue), also lived in the neighborhood.
Starkloff became a painter while living in a nursing home following an accident at age 21 that left him paralyzed below the neck. A retrospective of his work, organized by his widow Colleen Starkloff, as well as a short film: Max Starkloff: A Life by Gary Womack is on view at Bruno David Gallery in Grand Center until Saturday, June 27.
For more on Starkloff, above, read Stefene Russell's in-depth article in St. Louis Magazine here, or Max Starkloff and the Fight for Disability Rights by local authors Charlie Claggett and Richard Weiss, available at Left Bank Books.
Bruno David Gallery, 3721 Washington Ave., Wednesday through Saturday, 10 to 5.
