The Central West End is fortunate to have two ice cream shops within several blocks of each other and on Saturday, the first sunny day since I can’t remember when, the neighborhood was celebrating “Ice Cream for Breakfast Day.” The event, from 9 a.m. to Noon, drew families and friends to Clementine’s or Jeni’s—or perhaps in a few cases both —to have dessert for breakfast, something many parents would normally frown upon.
Clementine’s Naughty & Nice Ice Cream, 306-308 N. Euclid, featured a Breakfast at Tiffany’s theme with coffee mugs for the first 25 families, Tiffany & Co. giveaways, and Dancakes Pancake Art.
There was a line for a sample from Dancakes Pancake Art, above.Special flavors created for the morning included Toasted Nutella Crunch, Grapefruit Sorbet, and Vietnamese Coffee.A quiet corner at Clementine’s, above.
At Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, 389 N. Euclid:The morning’s special flavors at Jeni’s included Maple Soaked Pancakes, Banana French Toast, and Skillet Cinnamon Roll.
The shop smelled delicious too, as Jeni’s usual waffle cone was flavored with a French Toast spice for the morning’s event.
There are probably no happier shop windows to peek into than those where people of all ages are enjoying a dish of ice cream. But yesterday morning’s observation of families dressed in pajamas at Jeni’s, or young teenagers in pearls at Clementine’s, was even better. Although I did not have ice cream for breakfast, if this had been a happening when my children were young, we definitely would have been in the middle of it all.
I wish I could have joined you.
