Gallery openings in the CWE are always a great experience, but with the opening night crowds it’s often a challenge to get a really good look at the art. So, what follows are examples of what you’ll find in the current exhibitions at the CWE’s Duane Reed and Houska Galleries, The openings were held on May 17, but there are a few weeks remaining to get over to McPherson and experience the imaginative art at a more relaxed pace.

Steven Montgomery’s ceramics, which are shown in the gallery’s back room, include:Euclidean Large Stein #2, 2024, earthenware, gold luster glaze, oil paint, 10.5 x 9 x 9.5 inches.
From the artist’s statement: “Born in Detroit, Steven Montgomery’s work revels in a history of industry and aging as the artist uses porcelain to produce intricate mechanical forms with the appearance of metal.”

The St. Louis-based artist earned a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011. From the artist’s statement: “Ultra-vibrant shaped canvases merge and conjoin, undulating across walls and dancing through space. Wobbly edges and rhythmic movement reject the clinical austerity of minimalism in favor of an unabashed, imperfect humanness. Also on view at Houska Gallery, is Sam Meléndez’ Misuri. The artist was born in Puerto Rico and now lives in St. Louis.
