UPDATE: If you are able to help spread mulch at Kennedy Park on Saturday morning, the meeting time is now at 11 a.m. not 8 a.m.
Dan Boccabella, president of the neighborhood’s CWE Friends and Families, sent news that the annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place in Kennedy Park this Sunday, April 13, at 3 p.m. The park is located where Washington & Olive merge, just east of Euclid.
The photo, above, taken at the start of last year’s event, shows how important(!) it is to be on time. Though Boccabella is filling over 2000 plastic eggs with candy, and while that’s a LOT, they disappear fast in those seemingly bottomless Easter baskets. Oh, and of course, the Easter Bunny will be there too.
For those who aren’t familiar with the background on the CWE Families and Friends group, and its connection to the formation of Kennedy Park, here is a post from 2006.
Dan Boccabella has been the president and, as he describes it, “the sole member since Heather Navarro—who was president for many years, became alderperson in 2016. “I agreed to take it over ‘for a while,'” Boccabella said.
The organization was formed by parents of toddlers, most of whom lived on Westminster Place, who joined together to find a location for a toddler playground that would be within walking distance. That’s when the triangular park at the intersection of Washington and Olive was identified as a potential location. One of the group’s first newsletters, which is reprinted below, also describes that effort.
Boccabella reported that “When the original founders’ kids had grown up, activity in the group, and care and maintenance of the park fell off.” (Care of the park hs since been undertaken by the CWE North SBD.) Boccabella is now hoping some new families with young children will take the Friends and Families organization over.
Those who are interested in volunteering to help spread mulch this Saturday AT 11 a,m., or to help Dan keep the organization going, may contact him at [email protected]. For Saturday’s workday, there will be some work tools available, but bring your own garden gloves, and a shovel, rake, or wheelbarrow if you can.
