Hopefully, those of you who are tuned into the CWE gallery schedules have seen the fantastic exhibitions that opened July 18. But for those who missed the event, you have until this Saturday, August 23, to stop by Duane Reed, Houska and Philip Slein galleries to catch the exhibits.
Meanwhile, Square One Gallery hosted an opening of new works on August 8, and that exhibition closes September 5. All the neighborhood galleries are participating in a Gallery Night on Friday, September 12, sponsored by CWEScene.
On view at Houska Gallery:

St. Louis-based Lauren Knight in front of Recumbent, acrylic on canvas, 48 x 60 inches. Knight, a self-taught painter, is an avid gardener and former writer who began painting in 2017. The exhibition features paintings of her extensive backyard garden. Another example is shown below.

Also at Houska Gallery are paintings by St. Louis-based Aly Ytterberg, above. Ytterberg earned her degree in sculpture at WashU. Three of her abstract and minimalist landscape paintings, acrylic on canvas, are shown above.
Houska Gallery, 4728 McPherson, Open Tues. thru Sat. 11 to 4, or by appt. , (314) 496-1377.

Gallerist Philip Slein enjoys a light moment at the opening of artist Jeff Aeling’s In Memoriam. The painter, who has been Slein’s friend for 23 years, passed away this spring.

Cider Cone at Twilight South of Pueblo, CO, oil on panel, 34 x 48 inches.
On Aeling’s website, he is described by author Hess Caplinger as “an American, an American painter of American landscapes.” There is also a beautiful piece by John Martin titled Painting Through the Lens of Photography. I think you will enjoy heading over to the website to read about each of these, and view much better photographs of the artist’s work.
Aeling’s Pond and Cumulus, oil on panel, 48 x 96 inches

The back wall of the gallery, shown beyond the exuberant art patrons, features a series of Aeling’s 14 x 20 inch paintings.

One of those small paintings is shown above.

Artist Jill Hackney is shown with her Le marais series, oil on wood panel, 60 x 48 inches. A native of New Orleans, she is a founding member of Studio 801, an artists’ cooperative in Baton Rouge.
Hackney’s focus is to show light on her subjects through a series of vertical and linear strokes.

Jeffrey Vaughn’s Aspens at Dawn, oil on canvas, 36 x 36 inches. An Alton-Illinois native, Vaughn earned his BFA from WashU and his MFA from University of Dallas.

Vaughn’s Crabapple Blossoms, oil on canvas, 36″ x 36.” Here is a link for more of Vaughn’s work being shown at Duane Reed.

St. Louisan Ahzad Bogosian’s Stillness, acrylic on canvas, 36 x 36 inches.
Bogosian holds both a BFA and MFA from Fontbonne University and was enrolled in the MFA program at WashU. Ahzad describes his work as “a response to the atmospheric, sublime qualities and spiritual essence that exists in landscapes.”

Dirk Staschke’s Beyond a Shadow, ceramic, 22 x 22 x 22 inches. Staschke, a resident of Portland, Oregon, earned his BFA from the University of Montevello, and MFA from Alfred University. His work has been shown around the world, including the Smithsonian. More info is available here.

At Square One Gallery, exhibitions by Carrie Gillen and Andrew Faris will remain on view until September 5.

St. Louis-based artist Carrie Gillan is photographed alongside Upside Dream, stretched fabric, acrylic, set in natural wood frame, each 48 x 48 inches, total 96 x 48 inches.

From left: Liner Notes, stretched fabric, acrylic, set in handmade raw wood frame, 20 x 20 inches, Right, Red Arrangement, stretched fabric, acrylic, set in handmade raw wood frame, 20 x 20 inches.
Gillan uses fabric to amplify movement and tension in her work. “I like the physicality of making paintings that require me to stretch, pull and break. I like that type of mark-making as opposed to just paint on canvas.”
