For artist Brock Seals, above, a graduate of Jennings Senior High School, St. Louis presents a blank canvas. He seems to be all over the place. While he’s currently creating art in his studio at TechArtista’s location in The Grove, 1040 S. Taylor, he’s also popping up on social media and in an interview with St. Louis Public Radio’s Sarah Fenske. This summer he was one of the artists commissioned to design an arch for St. Louis Shakespeare Festival’s A Late Summer Night’s Stroll in Forest Park, shown above and below.
When asked how he was handling his art since COVID19 upended our lives, Seals said: “Usually I get the luxury of displaying my work in a gallery or some type of art show. Due to the pandemic I was limited to just social media. With this in place I had to find creative ways to brand my products. In return I was able to do more public art than I’ve ever done in my career. Along with painting shoes and clothing, I can say that my art survived.”
A mural featuring Chadwick Boseman was painted in the South40 tunnel under Forsyth Blvd. on the Washington University campus.
Vote=Voice is painted on Belrue Avenue off Page Blvd. in Pagedale.
Seals’ mural on the W Karaoke Bar at 6655 Delmar Blvd.
…and another on a private residence.
Seals’ painted shoes, above, are actually how we met. He was sitting outside the CWE’s TechArtista sporting a very imaginative pair of his own design. After we spoke for a while I asked if I could include him in my series about how local artists are coping during the pandemic.
Seals is also working on a new music video, The Artivist, a combination of his art and activism. It will release on all digital streaming services in January. Here is a link for his most recent video It’s Up, which was filmed at The City Museum and the Angad Arts Hotel in Grand Center. (Note: The video contains explicit language.)
