A monthly Art Stroll in the “gallery district” along McPherson begins tomorrow, Saturday, June 19, from Noon to 4 p.m. The event, organized by the CWE North Community Improvement District, will continue on the 3rd Saturday of each month through August.
In addition to an opportunity to visit the galleries in person—Houska Gallery, Duane Reed Gallery, projects+gallery and Philip Slein Gallery—there will be family activities including a DIY arts/crafts project presented by Perennial (from Noon to 5), music, street performers, and art demonstrations.
I had the pleasure of visiting one of the galleries, projects+gallery in person last Saturday, to view Michele Pred’s Freedom for Everybody.
Following is an excerpt taken from a description of Swedish-American Pred’s work found on the gallery’s website: “In her artistic practice, Pred uses sculpture, assemblage and performance to uncover the cultural and political meaning behind everyday objects, with a concentration on feminist themes such as equal pay, reproductive rights, and personal security. As Pred’s work implores us, now more than ever we must raise our voices to protect the freedom of all bodies, especially those historically disempowered.”
Freedom of Choice, 2014, American flag fabric on wood.
Time’s Up, 2018, neon on vintage train case. Right: Love as Activism, 2021, neon, plexiglass.
The Power of the Purse, an assemblage of vintage purses “emblazoned in neon (electroluminescent wire) with phrases culled from the current social resistance movements.” Close up below.
These are just a sampling of Pred’s provocative work, which will remain on view until August 7.
