Expect the unexpected at future Local Social Events sponsored by the CID (Community Improvement District) which feature entertainment, artists, and a chance to celebrate the neighborhood on the second Friday of each month from May through August.
I wonder what was "in the cards" for this young man as read by the "Funny Fortune Teller" at the corner of Euclid and Maryland.
Artist Erin McGrath Reike was dripping paint next to the fountain on Maryland Plaza.
The Landolfi Quartet played in front of AG on Maryland Plaza.
Mario Pascal's band was on Coffee Cartel's patio.
Mango Jay and his steel drum were set up near Wolfgang's Pet Stop, 330 N. Euclid.
I enjoyed chatting with artist Jeff Sass about his art – painting his own photographs. The subject last Friday was a public telephone (remember those?). Since his other medium is photography we were discussing cameras when Sass said he would bring his homemade Afghan box camera to the next Local Social, a device I had read about in the NY TImes recently (here). Afghan box cameras use no film but can both take and print a photograph.
Alongside Gringo at Euclid and McPherson.
Painter & mixed-media artist Cassandra Ronning set up an easel on the parking lot at 449 N. Euclid (the site of the CWE Flea). The artist painted quick portraits of anyone who wanted to sit for a while.
The World Chess Hall of Fame put a life-size game board on the same parking lot for the occasion. It got a workout from the Hand sisters who made up their own rules. Their mother, Emma, and Brooke Williams, both CWEnders and proprietors of Indie Mats, set up a pop-up shop on the lot. So did jeweler Christiane Danna, whose shop, Christiane's, is in the 449 N. Euclid building.
Two friends happened upon the board and seemed to know what they were doing.
Don Bailey, proprietor of Evangeline's Bistro & Music Hall, brought in entertainers from New Orleans, including the magician shown above and below.

A stiltwalker reached for the sky as she wound her way through the outside dining tables at Evangeline's and then made her way inside…good thing CWE buildings have such tall ceilings.
Another performer who plays with fire shown in front of Evangeline's.
A member of the William Collier Band is shown behind the dapper gentleman decked out for the occasion in the white suit. The jazz band performed on the restaurant's patio.
The next Local Social is scheduled for Friday, June 13. Don't miss it!
Great pictures, Nicki. Thanks.
